Sustainable Event Management or Event Greening is a key trend that has increased in popularity over the last few years. Planners are re-creating the entire format of events from weddings to corporate galas by blending a unique combo of traditional ideas with innovate designs to transform the environmental impact of their event. You too can make a positive impact on the community with a few of these eco-friendly tips.

  • Take the first step in reducing the carbon footprint of your event by selecting a “Green” venue. A growing number of venues across the country are becoming LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certified venues have been evaluated based on measures such as ENERGY STAR® score, plumbing fixture efficiency, alternative transportation access, and recycling and ventilation rates.  GreenSeal has also implemented a rigorous process for identifying hotels dedicated to reducing their environmental impact.  If choosing both hotels and venues, book hotels that are within walking distance to the venue.
  • Select a caterer that offers a Farm to Table Menu utilizing local farmers for its produce and dairy and always select traditional serviceware for your event. If you must select disposable, use compostable eco-ware for your event needs.
  • Consider utilizing non-floral centerpieces or renting plants to create a beautiful ambiance and take advantage of natural lighting by hosting events in the daytime.
  • Communicate with your vendors to combine trucking or shipping which will reduce not only greenhouse gas emissions but your labor cost as well!
  • Make social media your go to for publicizing events. You’ll save on printing and postage (refer back to our May post for additional Social Media tips!)
  • Local speakers and performers are a great additional to any event. Keep your cost local and its perfect way to highlight the talent your city and community.

So roll out the green carpet for your guests and help reduce, reuse and recycle! By incorporating just a few of these suggestions, your impact will prove beneficial for generations to come.
